As the nation observed National Nurses Week, Russell R. Barksdale, Jr., MPA/MHA, FACHE, president and CEO of Waveny LifeCare Network, thanked nurses for their efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This pandemic has made it abundantly clear that nurses have always been and always will be on the front lines of keeping our residents and communities safe,” Barksdale said. “We thank them every day for their service, chosen vocation, sacrifices, and commitment in everything that they do in providing the highest quality and most compassionate care. They truly are great humanitarians.”

National Nurses Week begins on National Nurses Day, May 6, and culminates May 12, the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing. This year, the American Nurses Association has announced that nurse’s week has been expanded to the entire month of May.

“Thank you for serving on the front lines in the fight against COVID-19 and for your enduring commitment to protect and serve the vulnerable population that is depending on us,” said Lynn Iverson, campus administrator, and herself, a nurse.

This year, Nurses Week coincides with the 200th anniversary of Nightingale’s birthday. “We celebrate her passion for and promotion of evidence-based practice and innovation that continue to grow and thrive today among nurses worldwide,” said Carol Smith, RN, CHM, administrator/V.P. of Home Services at Waveny.

Speaking on behalf of the Waveny LifeCare board of directors, Kathleen A. Corbet, chairman stated, “While we honor and express our gratitude to all of our nurses this week, we are indeed grateful for their compassion and care that they provide to our resident and patient community all year long.”
