Waveny LifeCare Network COVID-19 Daily Update
for Residents, Patients, and Families

The situation with COVID–19 is extremely dynamic in terms of health facility clinical environments, federal and local operating directives and emerging epidemiological research. We will continue to make informed, proactive decisions grounded in optimizing prevention, care and consistent testing/re-testing of our Patients and Residents.

As mentioned, we are continuing to increase qualified COVID -19 testing and re-testing frequency across our Patient and Resident base, enabling us to closely monitor, adjust and improve our care interventions, and client outcomes.

Testing is of two types:

1.      Swabbing and re-swabbing to collect nasopharyngeal specimens (PCR). Like a snapshot, this provides an indication of who is infected at a fixed point in time, allowing for better isolation and targeting of recovery interventions.

2.      Serological testing measures antibodies in bloodwork (IgG). This test’s advantage is that it indicates patient has been infected and the level of antibody production as their immune system responds to being exposed to an invasive virus. Antibody production can take up to 3 weeks to be measureable, and can indicate who theoretically should be immune to a pathogen (foreign invader). However the length of one’s immunity has not been established under evidenced based methods and could be compromised if a person is of advanced age with underlying co-morbidities like COPD, CHF, hypertension, diabetes or immune dysfunction.

Under all testing scenarios, we will continue to apply stringent clinical best practices and CDC, Connecticut DPH and Medical Director directives regarding safety, hygiene, preventive and recovery care, and responsively communicate these developments to our families.
